How to Achieve the Optimal Volume When Doing a Ph.D. Thesis?

As we have already noted, the optimal amount of scientific work is an individual and approximate parameter. There are no clear recommendations for its definition and establishment, everything is based on the completeness of the disclosure of the topic and the validity of the author's position, hypothesis. The main thing is not to overdo in this difficult matter and provide a clear, reasoned description of each step and develop an approach to resolving the current situation.

To establish the optimal volume of a Ph.D. thesis, the author should carefully work out the scientific apparatus, form a research plan, predetermining the key parameters at each stage (what to study, what to strive for, primary sources, etc.). Next, he will have to collect all the necessary materials, facts, investigate them and form a “draft version” of the study, preferably taking into account the design rules and requirements. Next, we evaluate the project from all sides.

First, determine the total volume of the Ph.D. thesis: does it meet the general requirements, recommendations of the mentor, does it reveal the author's intention and the topic as a whole. Then analyze the logic of RD: is the author clearly studying the topic, is gradually immersed in the nuances (it is important to follow from simple to complex), has the intended goal been achieved, have all the tasks been completed, do the results correlate with the goal and hypothesis, are the results and conclusions justified and etc.

Evaluate the proportionality of chapters and subparagraphs. If serious violations of this rule are identified, then it is important to clarify the reason: if there is an excess of the specified volume, then the composition of the section should be revised, filtering out secondary primary sources, reformulating the text concisely and concisely, etc. If there is a lack of data, then first evaluate the weight of the section (degree of validity), completeness of stage and project disclosure.

Be sure to follow the formatting requirements. Sometimes, in the draft version, the volume of the study does not comply with the standards, but taking into account the requirements (setting margins, indents, design of graphic materials, etc.), the volume of the study becomes more relevant to the main parameters. Therefore, evaluate the volume taking into account the design and clarifying the sections (which points are included in the total volume and which are not).
