If you're just catching up on our epic 11-day California road trip, be sure to check out the first three parts of the journey to see what you've missed so far. You can find the details of our adventures in Part 1 - San Francisco, Part 2 - Napa Valley, and Part 3 - Yosemite, which set the tone for the unforgettable experiences that followed.

Leaving Yosemite’s Wilderness Behind

After a few days of immersing ourselves in the breathtaking scenery of Yosemite, with its towering cliffs, crystal-clear waterfalls, and rugged hiking trails, it was time to trade the natural beauty for something a little more, shall we say, flamboyant.

The Long Haul to San Luis Obispo

Our destination for Day 8 was San Luis Obispo, known affectionately as SLO by locals. The drive from Yosemite to SLO is a considerable one, taking around five hours in total, with roads that alternate between the long, straight expanses typical of California’s highways and the winding, serpentine roads that feel like something out of a car commercial.

We set off after breakfast, ready for a lengthy journey through California’s diverse landscapes. With Mariah Carey’s greatest hits blasting from the speakers for a solid hour and forty minutes, the car became a rolling karaoke stage, with all three of us belting out the tunes until our voices gave out. Marcos, once again, took the wheel of our Ford Mustang. Though I hadn’t driven up to this point, I knew that once we left SLO, it would be my turn to take on the responsibility of driving down to Los Angeles.

We made a brief pit stop at Kettleman City before continuing the journey, eager to reach our much-anticipated destination: the world-famous Madonna Inn.

Arriving at The Madonna Inn: A World of Whimsy

The Madonna Inn is one of those iconic California hotels that almost defies description. Part fantasy, part retro extravaganza, it’s known for its bold, colorful aesthetic and has earned a reputation as a must-visit destination for anyone embarking on a road trip through Central California.

Even before setting foot in the hotel, we’d heard numerous recommendations. And while it’s on the pricier side, the experience is worth every penny. The Madonna Inn isn’t just famous for its kitschy charm, but also for hosting A-list celebrities and those in search of a truly unique stay.

Boasting 110 themed rooms and 26 suites, each with its own quirky decor, the hotel is a sensory overload of vibrant colors and whimsical design. From the "Caveman" room to the "Fabulous Fifties" suite, each room is a work of art in its own right, with names that only add to the intrigue. Some of my personal favorites include "American Beauty," "Bridal Falls," "Cloud Nine," and "Yosemite Rock."

Checking into China Flower

We were assigned Room 106, whimsically named China Flower. It featured a king bed for Roz and me, with Marcos taking the adjoining double bed. The room’s decor was steeped in subtle Asian influences, with jade-colored wallpaper adorned with delicate floral patterns. Gold ceilings and lacquered black furnishings added to the opulent yet tranquil ambiance, which was further enhanced by the beautifully landscaped corridors just outside our room.

Poolside Relaxation at the Madonna Inn

After a quick unpack and change into swimwear, we made our way to the Madonna Inn’s rooftop pool. Surrounded by stunning views of the surrounding hills, the pool area is a haven for relaxation. We treated ourselves to Moscow Mule cocktails, prepared by the friendly bartender, John, before taking a dip in the hot tub.

Beyond the pool, the hotel offers a host of amenities, including an artificial waterfall, numerous hiking trails, and the option to hire bikes for those looking to explore the local area. For wine lovers, there’s also an onsite wine tasting experience that’s not to be missed.

Wrapping Up Day 8

By the time we settled into our room after a full day of driving and poolside lounging, we were thoroughly enchanted by the unique charm of the Madonna Inn. It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left, with its playful energy and unforgettable decor offering the perfect contrast to the natural grandeur of Yosemite.

As we settled into the plush beds, thoughts of the road ahead filled my mind—after all, it wouldn’t be long before I’d be behind the wheel, guiding us down the coast to our next adventure in Los Angeles. But for now, we were content to enjoy the whimsical luxury of our temporary home at the Madonna Inn.
