Different Types of Parylene Coatings: Features and Uses

Parylene is the common generic name for poly-para-xylylene. It forms a protective plastic film when applied to substrate surfaces.

These films are highly durable and safeguard substrates with a dependable barrier layer against water vapor, caustic solutions, and many other contaminants. There are many different types of Parylene such as Parylene D, Parylene AF4 PolymerParylene C and Parylene N.

Parylene N

Parylene N is a basic form of Parylene, made up of a linear carbon-hydrogen molecule structure. It is characterized by its vacuum stability and low dielectric constant. It is also halogen-free, which makes it preferable over Parylene C in some industries where halogen-free Parylene is required. The most common applications for polyethylene N are printed circuits, elastomers, and medical and non-medical electronics.

Parylene C

Parylene C has very low permeability to moisture, corrosive gases, and chemicals. Due to its low permeability, it provides superior protection against corrosive situations. Like other types, the Parylene Coating Process for Parylene C involves adding it to the substrate by the means of chemical vapor disposition process. It is an ideal coating when one needs an intense coat to ensure high protection.

Parylene D

Parylene D is ideal when physical strength or electronic properties are preferred. When high levels of protection are desired, Parylene D is the ideal choice. It is used in medical devices, microelectromecanical system devices, and caustic environments.

Parylene F

Parylene F is not fit for the same commercial use as other Parylene C, N, and D. However, it still has qualities like a low dielectric constant and great thermal stability. Also, it has a higher coating density when used in various applications.

Parylene AF-4

Parylene AF-4 has higher oxidative resistance and UV stability than other types of uses. However, it requires a three-step process and high production costs, which limit its use to only specialized uses.

Conventional Coating Suppliers offer a range of conformal coatings. It is recommended to take some time to find a reliable and certified vendor that has been proven to do a great job.
